RYA Support Courses


Our programme of one-day support courses enables you to expand your knowledge and skills in specialist areas. They are great as stand alone courses, but also complement courses in our various practical training schemes.

Some courses, such as the Marine Radio Short Range Certificate, are a pre-requisite for higher qualifications such as the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.

First Aid

In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers.

Course content First aid and resuscitation techniques for yachtsmen, including a knowldge of the treatment for hypothermia
Ability after course Understands basic first aid in a marine environment

VHF

This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment.

Course content Use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures
Ability after course Can use a marine VHF radio
Minimum duration 1 day including exam

Radar

A one-day course increasingly popular on both sailing and motor boats. Radar is an invaluable aid for navigation and collision avoidance but it is only useful in the hands of a knowledgeable operator.

Course content Basic understanding of radar and set controls. Plotting and collision avoidance. Navigation techniques
Ability after course Knowledge of how to use radar in a small boat

Diesel Engine

Mechanical failure is the main cause of lifeboat callouts to yachts. This course includes basic maintenance and engine care which will prevent most cases of engine failure.

Course content Basic maintenance and engine care
Ability after course Awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine. Able to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects which do not require workshop support
